Until recently I was very sceptical about the value (both educationally and personally) of Ning. I’ve not been seduced by the thrill of Facebook so the notion of starting another social network seemed entirely unappealing.
But…having started my own Ning in partnership with the team from the Innovation and Next Practice Branch and I can genuinely say I am thrilled by the results. The discussions have been fabulous, added content has been relevant and there has been plenty of control for the administartors (of which I am just one).
There are so many practical applications for a Ning that I’m not sure where to begin as far as suggestions are concerned. Here are just a few…
- run a class forum on a contentious issue
- create a research project that requires students to source relevant audio, video or images
- post homework sheets online
- encourage parents to join the Ning. Post excursion sheets for them to print, sign and return
- have a calender that reminds students, parents and teachers of upcoming events
- create photot albums of significant class events
- encourage metacognition through student blogs about their learning
- email homework/reminders to all participants
That’s my quick brainstrom. What can you add?
